The Intersection of Faith and Fitness

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), yet many of us compartmentalize our faith and our fitness. But what if they were never meant to be separate? What if caring for our physical health is a vital part of our spiritual discipline?
Here’s how our faith and fitness intersect—and how you can begin living that connection daily:
Stewardship Over Strength- Fitness isn’t about vanity—it’s about stewardship. God has entrusted us with a body, and maintaining it with care, rest, and movement is part of our worship. Whether it’s walking, lifting, or stretching—moving your body is honoring the life you’ve been given.
Discipline is Spiritual- "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness..." (Hebrews 12:11)The self-control and consistency required in fitness routines mirror the discipline needed in prayer, reading Scripture, and pursuing purpose. Training the body helps train the mind and spirit.
Energy for Purpose- When we care for our physical health, we serve better, love stronger, and lead longer. Energy, endurance, and mental clarity are vital for fulfilling our God-given purpose. A strong body supports a resilient spirit.
The Battle of the Mind- Fitness isn’t just about the body—it’s about mindset. Breaking mental barriers in the gym or on the trail builds the resilience we need in life’s spiritual battles. Push through, not to impress—but to transform.
It’s Not About Perfection- Just like our spiritual walk, fitness is a journey. There will be missed workouts, poor food choices, and low-energy days—but we don’t quit. We realign. We reset. We keep moving forward.

Practical Application This Month
Set a weekly movement goal (3 days of intentional exercise). This is a work-in-progress for me at this moment.
Pair your workouts with worship music or Scripture meditation. This I found to be helpful when walking.
Invite your spouse, a brother, a friend, or your child to work out and talk life and faith. I have found joy in taking Sunday evening walks with my sons lately.
When your body and spirit are in alignment, you become a sharper instrument in God’s hands. So for the rest of this month, train like you’re on mission—because you are.
Best wishes,
L.B.
