There's an amazing speaker & performance entertainer I heard speak a couple of years back by the name of Dan Thurmon. Dan is the source of the acronym GRIP I'll be sharing with you in this post. Dan Thurmon, according to his website, is a Dynamic Keynote Speaker & Peak Performance Coach. I think he is phenomenal at many things, but the one thing that stands out to me is his ability to inspire the mind to see instability as a strength. His best selling book is titled "Off Balance On Purpose." Enough about Dan.

GRIP simply means "Grasp Reality. Influence the Process."

Grasping Reality is accepting that change is inevitable. Many would rather not have anyone move their cheese (Who Moved My Cheese? is an excellent book by Spencer Johnson). Where we kept our cheese, is where we want it to be. Don't change my routine, don't change my job responsibilities, and don't you dare change the environment I thrive in. Just let me be. The problem with this mentality is that change is the only thing that's constant. So getting a GRIP is essential to thriving past change.

Once you Grasp Reality, you can then confidently Influence the Process. If you spend time complaining about change, that change will change you. But if you Grasp Reality and are present/available to Influence the Process to change, you could positively affect the shift in your favor. It's like a Senator who fails to show up for the vote; an absent party has no say in the decision. You need to be present to influence the process. Influencing the process is engaging in the decision making. It includes bringing in ideas to simplify, standardize and sustain the possible options. Influencing the process is having a say in how change occurs. It's taking the bull by the horn. It's getting on the green and getting dirty. It's getting it done.

So get a GRIP, grasp reality, influence the process, and see what great things are in store for you.
